Church?
The Freeway is a holistic Christian community in Hamilton, Ontario that was started in 2002. Quite simply, we are a community of people who are committed to making the Kingdom of God tangible in our neighbourhood. We believe that people should be able to touch it, taste it, see it, sense it. We want to live the “Good News” wherever it is we find ourselves throughout the week. We seek to be part of the rhythms of our city, to be good neighbours, good friends, and good servants.
The following are some things that we are committed to being, based on our impression of mission found in Luke 10:1-12 (a passage of Scripture which has been very influential for us):
Cultured: We immerse ourselves in the current culture without becoming a product of it. We want to create, influence, and subvert culture.
Neighboured: We are committed to the local. We try our best to love our neighbours (and our neighbourhood), especially those who are marginalized, disenfranchised, and disregarded.
Partnered: We are in this together (proximity, deep relationships, networked).
Storied: We want to listen more and talk less. Listening to other people’s story and connecting their story with God’s amazing story, changes us.
Shared: Everything we own is God’s and we need to share our lives with others (generosity & hospitality).
Normalized: The church community is simply a catalyst for transforming everyday actions and priorities (“go” instead of “attract”). We believe that the Spirit of God is at work in the lives of everyday people in everyday environments.
Kingdomized: We want to be an active part of living out and naming the Kingdom that Jesus established (shalom).
As a church community, we have been described as progressive, urban, creative, emerging, holistic & missional. None of those single ideas are great categories for us, but they do help to paint in broad strokes what we are about.
We value truth, justice, beauty, community, authenticity, and hope.
You can find out more about who we are by reading our story and following our blog. You can read about some of the stuff we do like our gatherings or Cultivate. You can check out our funky, non-profit coffee house. Or you can get information about some of the leaders of this church community. But honestly, if you really want to get to know what The Freeway is all about, you need to show up in person and get to know us. We’d really like that.
A great entry point may be our worship gatherings. We meet at our coffee house at 6 pm on Sunday nights. We’d love to see you sometime.
